OSA as a Thankless Job?

I just talked to Pia Nazareno, the new OSA Director, and she was telling me that people were advising her not to take the job. I can sympathize with her position because I remember when I took the post more than 10 years ago, people expressed disappointment because I was moving away from the academic track, because they said it was a thankless job, and that it was a dead-end job.

Honestly, I still don’t understand why people were and are negative about the position (except maybe that academics have a particular set of values I don’t necessarily share). Yes, it was a distraction from further studies and yes, it was a dead-end but it was surely worth it.

The opportunity to get things done and put things into place, the opportunity to enable, the opportunity to meet people who until today are my good friends.

I’m glad Pia’s there and knowing her, I’m sure she’ll do a good job. I hope she enjoys herself in her new position.
